A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, raising questions about potential gains made from non-public details of American actions.
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the end of January rose in the period preceding Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the president had been seized.
A particular user, which registered on the site recently and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436,000 from a starting bet of over $32,000.
It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Platform data shows that traders estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.
However the market's assessment had jumped to over 10% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the morning of January 3rd, pointing to a sharp shift in betting activity right before the official statement was made.
"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on inside information," stated an industry expert.
Several of other traders also earned significant sums from predicting the capture.
Some lawmakers are starting to take note.
Proposed legislation presented on recently seeks to ban federal workers from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.
Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the United States, with traders able to predict everything from elections to political events.
The industry faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.
Trading on insider information is illegal in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting industry.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
