Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
