During the summer of 2023, Arsenal announced that three emerging prospects would transfer to Watford on dual agreements. Among them were Katie Reid and Michelle Agyemang, who eventually gained significant attention for notable successes and serious setbacks.
Athletic journeys commonly demand both luck and opportunity. When Leah Williamson suffered a ligament damage that kept her out from the WSL campaign, it created space for Katie Reid to step up. Likewise, Russo's foot injury led to the young striker being chosen for England. Both players excelled before facing anterior cruciate ligament damage, making their career halts particularly disheartening.
What about, the remaining member from that three-player arrangement? Her name is Laila Harbert, an 18-year-old midfielder who joined Portland Thorns this summer. This marks her third temporary move after earlier periods with Watford and Southampton. She joined during the middle of the National Women's Soccer League campaign to boost her development at a higher intensity level.
“Seeing their success drives you to deserve similar opportunities through continuous effort,” Harbert states from Portland.
Reflecting on the knee problems that impacted her ex-colleagues Agyemang and Reid, Harbert says she feels “heartbroken”. “It’s the kind of news you never want anyone to receive, especially about your closest friends,” she notes. “As athletes, we're concerned about the growing frequency of ACL injuries.”
Harbert emphasizes that “something needs to change and more must be done to find solutions that protect us.” She promises that “As soon as I’m back in England, I’ll be straight there to support them.”
Laila became part of the club's youth system at nine years old and, two years later, began training with boys. This method had grown common at the football institution.
“You're pushed to perfect tiny elements,” Harbert explains. “Since male players typically possess more speed and power, I had to leverage my technical skills to evade confrontations where I might be disadvantaged.”
The midfielder elaborates: “They play a bit faster too, so you get better at moving the ball at high speeds. How much it had improved me really showed when I went back into the girls’ environment.”
The athlete's relatives made substantial concessions to support her football dreams, including moving from London to Hertfordshire. This strategic move brought her closer to Arsenal's training facility, reducing travel time to improve athletic output.
To the young player, this demonstrated “the total investment my relatives made in my youthful ambition.”
Laila served as on the reserve in the dramatic extra-time victory against San Diego Wave. This sets up an upcoming NWSL playoff semi-final against their Eastern conference foes.
The temporary transfer will conclude when Portland's playoff run ends. The club hopes this will end with a championship win on the appointed day.
Arsenal plans to review the player's progression route after the championship determines. Such planning demands understanding in an ever-more professional women's league where opportunities for teenagers are diminishing.
“There’s no point in shying away from the fact that the average age in the WSL is about 25-26,” the midfielder comments. “At 18 you are sitting there thinking: ‘When is that going to be possible for me?’”
Harbert stresses that “What matters now is gaining top-level playing time and elite competition familiarity.”
The athlete describes that Arsenal has a comprehensive development plan that goes past short-term moves. “Should immediate first-team football not materialize at Arsenal, they've designed an extended strategy that we both believe in.”
The midfielder elaborates: “Comprehending the grand scheme matters most, where each loan period contributes to my eventual readiness to fight for a first-team spot.”
The player finishes with self-reflection: “Occasionally I become overly focused on results and my envisioned destination, neglecting the essential element of enjoyment.”
“My approach involves recalibrating victory through incremental growth, focusing on controllable elements, pursuing self-improvement to shape my destiny, all while savoring the experience.”
