When Brandi Carlile, had just turned twelve, making her home in a trailer in an remote area 50 miles outside Seattle, she begged her parents for a keyboard.
She developed a passion for her mum's collection of Elton John records and wanted to play along.
Yet when she broke her tiny Casio keyboard removing it from the Toys R Us box, she had to face an uncomfortable reality.
"I was just nowhere near talented enough," she laughs.
As an alternative, she put on Bruce Springsteen's Streets Of Philadelphia, selected the instrument's string synthesis option, and pressed down a couple of notes.
"You just hold them, during the section," she recalls. "It's accessible to everyone, but that's the foundation of my career."
Move forward three decades and the music legend is one of her best friends.
During the winter, they released a shared recording their album title that reached number one in Britain.
The musician has also been instrumental in the legendary singer's artistic recovery, persuading the elderly artist to appear in concert again after a serious medical emergency.
She has dedicated the last six years duetting with some of pop's biggest stars while organizing her regular musical event in the Latin American country.
The multiple possibilities stemmed from a particular show at the prestigious awards ceremony.
"I'd played that song hundreds of times but I consistently missed the concluding sound," she confesses now.
"Yet at the ceremony, I really wanted to get it right. Prior to the show, I trained and I trained.
Upon achieving it, I could hardly finish the composition. I felt like celebrating."
She wasn't the only one. Jaws were dropped. Audience members were wide-eyed. A new celebrity emerged.
Prior to exiting the stage, her mobile device was getting constant notifications with texts from incredibly prominent individuals.
"I immediately experienced this river of opportunity flowing into my life, and I was uncertain about the duration it was might endure, and so I said yes to everything," she reflects.
Reflecting now, she reckons the enthusiasm for seizing those chances was a consequence of her childhood.
Her upbringing in remote areas, Carlile knew she was homosexual, but had "not known" another gay person in her experience.
Her orientation altered the dynamic with her mom.
"All the ways she expected to bond with me, didn't work," she reveals.
"I avoided make-up or practice grooming or style my hair traditionally, and she was just like, 'How should I handle this situation?'"
They ultimately connected through musical appreciation.
Yet the awareness of being distinct continued, even after the artist got married and became a parent.
Afterward, just as quickly as it began, the compulsion faded.
During the autumn, she traveled directly from a show with Joni Mitchell to a recording session.
By the time she landed the city, she was suffering from excess and deeply affected.
"I dreaded the possibility of losing that proximity and hearing her perform that classic track again," she explains. "I enjoyed the best damn seat in the theater."
After six years of chasing opportunities, it was time to turn inwards.
"I understood this finished of a chapter," she comments, "noting that, yes, the opportunities might diminish, but I don't want to miss out on my children's early years."
Her daughters motivated an emotionally charged composition.
The track protests the increasing influence of religious conservatism on US politics.
captured during the political event, it expresses her concern about marriage equality.
This originated during a dinner conversation.
"I don't want to go to Canada," stated the little one.
"The older child responded and said, 'sibling, it's preferable to losing our parents'.
"I experienced deep embarrassment for failing to communicate clearly.
Another major influence is the legendary artist, whose exacting standards is "what motivates my fewer compositions," the artist explains.
The artist offers a loving yet playful homage to the icon on a track titled after her.
"She doesn't suffer fools, she avoids domestic tasks, and she doesn't coddle sensitive feelings," she vocalizes.
"She possesses untamed spirit," laughs the star. "At eighty-three years old and her drinking capacity exceeds most.
"She loves particular drinks and unmixed spirits. She's consistently surprising, free-spirited, enigmatic occasionally, and it's incredible."
